In recent weeks, the U.S. government has detained students like Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi, apparently over their support for Palestine. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was wrongfully exported to El Salvador, is being held at the notorious CECOT mega prison. We’ve also seen widespread ICE operations, random visas revoked and ideologically-driven attacks on the funding and functioning of our institutions of higher education. Immigrants, students, visitors and even U.S. residents — are facing exclusion, militarization, detention, rendition, and elimination of basic due process rights. Are our media doing enough to sound the alarm? The horror of “Bloody Sunday” and the resilience of the Civil Rights Movement ultimately led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and many of the landmark achievements that are now directly under attack. As civil rights activists look to history to understand — and prepare for — the present, Laura walks the Bridge and talks with, among others, Sheyann Webb-Christburg, who marched at the age of eight, Black Voters Matter co-founders LaTosha Brown and Clifford Albright; law professor and author Kimberlé Crenshaw and Maya Wiley, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Laura Flanders was recently in Alabama for the 60th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" and the Selma-to-Montgomery march. Led by Martin Luther King, Jr., this historic march led to the 1965 Voting Rights Act that prohibited discriminatory voting practices, and made it easier for Black Americans to vote.
